![]() ![]() The good news is it's in pretty good shape, minimal fret wear. The biggest hurdle is getting the neck off without too much finish blushing from too much steam. It needs a neck reset badly! I've steamed of the neck of a beat up FG-200 (hoping to finish it soon) and have a beat up FG-160 to practice on before tackling the FG-180. Obviously those numbers will only be worse with steel strings. The neck projects 1/18" below the bridge. I adjusted the neck relief and the action was still 1/8" at the 12th fret, with nylon strings. It came with nylon strings because the action was so high. 3 weeks ago I picked up a FG-180 red label Nippon Gakki for $20! YES!! $20!!! A college kid found it in a closet and wanted it gone. Comes with a chipboard case.I forgot to post about this. The Martin-styled neck is very comfortable and the metal tuners are solid. These late '60s/early '70s Yamahas are fantastic guitars for their price. There is also a few somewhat deep pick scratches above the bass side of the strings and some scratches on the side of the body towards the bottom of the guitar. The Made in Japan sticker/label has worn off the back of the headstock and there are a few scratches and finish dings especially on the back of the body. Despite that the guitar still plays and feels great. 011s due to what looks to be the beginning of some minor bridge lifting. We have dated it and narrowed down the place of manufacture to 1972 based on the serial number and the red label/'k' stamp. This is a Red Label Japanese-manufactured Nippon Gakki Yamaha FG-180 in good to very good condition. If you encounter any inaccuracies please email the web master. Yamaha serial numbers are recycled every ten years, 29 formats are supported here based on research available on the yamaha website. ![]() I did contact Yamaha and they told me that it had to be made between 1966 - 1968 because after that period, Yamaha began using eight characters as serial numbers. It’s widely known that the 8 digit serial numbers start with the year as the first number. My latest interest is decoding the mystery of the 6 & 7 digit serial numbers. ![]()
